Muinuddin Chrishti

Khwaja Moin -ud-din Chishti was established Chishti order in India .Its main Center was in Ajmer. He felt that service of god meant service of humanity. Even today, his dragah at Ajmer is a popular holy place. Nizamuddin Auliya was famous Sufi pir of the 14th century.

The Sufi Movement: In the beginning of the Medieval period , some Muslims were influenced by various religious ideas prevalent In India.This gave rise to the Sufi movement. The basic Sufi Philosophy was Islamic ,but included new ideas taken from other religions.

The Sufi saints led simple lives in Khanqahs or hospices which were like monasteries .The devotees of all religion used to come to these Khanqahs to seek the saints' blessings.Music and dance sessions, called sama were also held in Khanqahs.The relation between the pir (the teacher) and the disciples was special. The pir chose his successor to carry on the tradition.

Sufi Orders: The Sufis were organised in several orders called Silsilahs, In the thirteenth century, there were twelve silsilahs , each one named after its founder .The Chishtis , the Suharwardis,the Kubrawaiya, the Qalandariya and the Firdawsiya were the popular silsilahs.The Chishti order and the Suharawandi order were most popular in India.

Muinuddin Chrishti (1141-1238) was one of the most revered of the Sufi pirs. He came from Lahore and made Ajmer his home. All his life he worked for the poor. He felt that service of god meant service of humanity. Even today, his dragah at Ajmer is a popular holy place. Nizamuddin Auliya was famous Sufi pir of the 14th century. He set up his khanqab (order or monastery) in Delhi. He asked his followers to lead simple, austere lives and spend their time seeking god.
